The fifth, and final, call of the night, went like this:

CALLER: She never even cried.

CHIZMAR: I’m sorry? I missed what you just said.

CALLER: She never even cried.

CHIZMAR: Who never cried?

CALLER: Peyton Bair.

CHIZMAR: Who is this?

CALLER: A friend.

CHIZMAR: Okay. If you’re a friend… then why don’t you tell me your name.

CALLER: [laughter] I don’t think so.

CHIZMAR: What do you want?

CALLER: I’ve been a fan of yours for quite some time, Mr. Chizmar. I thought it would be nice to finally chat.

CHIZMAR: The floor’s yours. Chat away.

CALLER: Oh, don’t get shy on me now. For the past year, you’ve had plenty to say to anyone who would listen.

CHIZMAR: That’s exactly my point. I’m a little tired of the sound of my own voice. Why don’t you talk for a while instead?

CALLER: Just long enough for the police to trace this call, right?

CHIZMAR: I seriously doubt that the police are monitoring Mr. Lovecraft’s phone line.

CALLER: There will be others.

CHIZMAR: Others? What do you mean?

CALLER: Dead girls.

CHIZMAR: Hasn’t there been enough already?

CALLER: No.

CHIZMAR: Why don’t you stop hiding behind a mask and tell me who you are? Why are you doing this?

CALLER: There will be others. Soon. Who knows? Maybe even you.

[phone call ends]
